The Network of European LGBTIQ* Families Associations (NELFA) was created on 1st May 2009 to unite European associations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents and their children under one umbrella organisation representing Rainbow Families at the European level. NELFA was incorporated under Belgian law as an international non-profit association (AISBL) on 12th March 2012. The official NELFA headquarters are located in the Rainbow House in Brussels. With the incorporation of NELFA aisbl, thirteen NELFA founding members from Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland took a major step towards further consolidating NELFA’s work on behalf of LGBTIQ* families in Europe.
With 25 associations representing 15 European countries and thousands of LGBTIQ* families, NELFA promotes the exchange of information between its members and assists in creating and developing LGBTIQ* families associations in Europe.

Only associations of LGBTIQ* families or that deal substantially with issues related to LGBTIQ* families and which are duly constituted as associations in their European state of origin may apply to be full members of NELFA aisbl.
In order to be admitted as a full member the applicant association is required to demonstrate that:
A) The association is duly registered as an association in the European country of origin. The most convenient way of proving this is by submitting a copy of the applicant association’s articles, constitution, bylaws or any other document setting out when it was created and the authority that has sanctioned it (for example a State agency, a municipality, a court of law, etc.).
B) The applicant association is an association for LGBTIQ* families.
C) If an association is an umbrella association and is concerned with several LGBTIQ* issues of which LGBTIQ* families is one of those issues, the applicant association will be required to prove that it deals substantially with issues relating to LGBTIQ* families. To ascertain this, the board of NELFA aisbl would require that the applicant association is able to demonstrate that it deals substantially with LGBTIQ* families for example by having a group of LGBTIQ* families, hosting regular meetings for LGBTIQ* families, organising awareness and other campaigns for LGBTIQ* families. The board will consider the number of LGBTIQ* families and the services provided to these families by the applicant association.
D) In deciding whether an applicant association is admitted under ground C above, it is a material consideration to the decision-making process whether there is already an LGBTIQ* families association operating in the same geographical area.
E) The decision of the board of NELFA aisbl is final and may not be appealed.
