The next International Family Equality Day will take place on 7 May 2017. The motto is LOVE MAKES A FAMILY. Since the next International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) on May 17 will also focus on families, both initiatives have decided to join forces in 2017. From 7 May (IFED) to 17 May (IDAHOT), we call on everyone to take action to celebrate supportive and diverse families.
On May 7, 2017, LGBTIQ* family organizations from around the world will join together for the sixth time to increase the international visibility of LGBTIQ* families.
In 2017, activists are invited to celebrate families in all their forms. We are bringing you here a list of films and documentaries in which family relationships are a major component. This annual report introduces the organisations involved in the International Family Equality Day as well as the work done by the IFED Committee and highlights the activities that were held in the different countries to celebrate this day. It also aims to serve as an inspiration for the sixth IFED, which will take place 7 May 2017 and for LGBTIQ* parents, LGBTIQ* activists and other interested parties to get involved in the struggle for equality and recognition for rainbow families the world over.
Regardless of different legal, political and social circumstances around the world, the dramatic increase in the numbers of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer* (LGBTIQ*) people choosing to raise children is a global phenomenon.
In July 2011, LGBTIQ* family activists from around the world gathered for the first ever International Symposium of LGBTIQ* parenting organizations. The symposium provided an opportunity to establish ongoing international cooperation in areas such as research, visibility and advocacy, and the development of resources and programs for LGBTIQ* families worldwide. One of the key outcomes was the establishment of the first International Family Equality Day to take place on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
