NELFA PRESS RELEASE:
EU elections 2019: A new starting position for rainbow families! – NELFA encourages MEPs to become strong allies for LGBTIQ* parents and their children
The Network of European LGBTIQ* Families Associations, NELFA, takes a positive view of the recent EU elections and faces the future with confidence. The political landscape may tend towards far-right populists, but in the newly elected Parliament other movements are gaining ground at the same time (which ends the long-lasting dominant position of the conservative parties). Europe remains a colorful place and we won’t paint it depressing black.
NELFA’s President Eleni Maravelia says, “It’s true – there are political circumstances that could provide more hope for rainbow families within the EU, especially in a time where LGBTIQ* rights are already at risk. In general, encrusted structures are dissolving and this is accompanied by massive fears. But, let’s not bury our heads in the sand and let’s not abandon our trials to reconciliate with those who might think that LGBTIQ* parents and their children are a threat of traditional values and public orders. We are not a monstrosity of the spirit of the times. We are lovely families and deserve respect, equal treatment and protection.”
NELFA’s Vice President Björn Sieverding adds, “For the moment, there is no reason to conjure up ghosts. We invite old and new members of the European Parliament to continue the efforts to fight against any kind of discrimination, to work for more equality and the free movement of EU citizens and their family members. In the next legislature, NELFA won’t stop sharing with MEPs and staff members of the institutions how we live and why we need full legal recognition. It’s time to convince the hesitant people and to unmask the false prophets.”
Members of the EU Parliament can show their support for rainbow families, i.e. by filling out the questionnaire #VoteRainbowFamilies. More info here: http://nelfa.org/eu-elections/. NELFA encourages MEPs to join the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights. The current mandate will end in June, the official reconstitution is planned for November 2019. More than 1.600 candidates have signed ILGA-Europe’s #ComeOut2Vote pledge to support LGBTIQ* rights in the EU (i.e. freedom of movement ): https://www.comeout.eu/who-has-signed/
NELFA is the European platform of LGBTIQ* families associations, bringing together LGBTIQ* parents and parents-to-be from all over Europe. NELFA currently represents 37 organisations in 30 European countries with more than 20,000 members. NELFA is a member of ILGA-Europe, Transgender Europe and COFACE Families Europe.
